7,101 freshmen begin their journey at Xi'an Jiaotong University
On Sept 13, Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) welcomed 7,101 new undergraduate students at its Xingqing Campus, marking the start of their academic journey for the 2026 semester.

The opening ceremony featured an inaugural lesson by Wu Guosheng, Party secretary of XJTU, themed "Carrying Forward the Spirit of Westward Academic Relocation and Striving to Be New Successors." Wu highlighted the university's century-long history and its 70-year legacy of westward relocation, urging the freshmen to uphold rigorous scholarship, nurture patriotism, and maintain an open vision to carry forward the university's distinctive spirit.
Zhang Liqun, XJTU president and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a keynote address titled "Inherit the Spirit of Westward Academic Relocation, Cultivate Benevolent Character and Strive to Be a Light for the World." He emphasized the impact of artificial intelligence on modern learning and lifestyles. Zhang encouraged students to enhance their critical thinking and innovative abilities, align personal growth with national and global progress, and adhere to self-discipline and persistent practice.
The ceremony also included international and campus exchanges. Phil Taylor, president of the University of Bath, attended and encouraged students to embrace lifelong learning and interdisciplinary cooperation. Leaders from 10 world-renowned universities sent video messages to welcome the new students.

Senior students, domestic freshmen, and international students shared their perspectives on youth responsibility and campus growth.
The ceremony concluded with the singing of the university anthem by all attendees, symbolizing a vibrant start to the new academic year for XJTU's latest cohort.
