An academic paper co-authored by Professor Bian Yanjie and Professor Guo Xiaoxian from the Department of Sociology at Xi'an Jiaotong University's (XJTU) School of Humanities, titled How to View the Dialectical Relationship Between Qualitative and Quantitative Empirical Research Paradigms, was published as the lead article in the first 2026 issue of Zhejiang Academic Journal.

To date, the article has been reprinted in full by five of China's most authoritative academic digests: Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Science Digest, Renmin University Copies of Newspaper and Periodical Materials, High Education Liberal Arts Academic Digest, and Social Science Digest.

Having a single paper featured and reprinted by all five major digests is a rare feat in the humanities and social sciences, underscoring the work's strong academic value.

Focusing on a core issue in sociological methodology, the paper traces the historical evolution and developmental trajectories of qualitative and quantitative empirical research paradigms in both Chinese and Western sociology. It offers a deep analysis of their differing roles in philosophical foundations, knowledge generation, and disciplinary development.

The authors point out that while qualitative research excels at uncovering the deeper meanings behind social behaviors and constructing theoretical logic, quantitative research is suited for conducting broad social observations and verifying theoretical propositions. Rather than being oppositional, the two paradigms serve different functions and share a vital, complementary relationship.
