Hou Xun, afamous expert of optoelectronicsin China, was born in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province in Dec.1936. In 1959, hegraduated from the Physics Department of Northwest University, and has longbeen working at Xi’an Optical Precision Machinary Research Institute of CAS andXi’an Jiaotong University. In 1991, he was elected to be an academician ofChinese Academy of Sciences.

As the chief scientistof a Key Project of the Eighth Five-year Plan and one of the two principals ofa primary project of the Ninth Five-year Plan, he advocated and supported teamsfrom Xi’an Jiaotong University to carry out applied research of femtosecondlaser technology and research on material and device of wide bandgapsemiconductors as well as organic electroluminescence. He has won a specialNational Award for the Progress in Science and Technology, 4 National Awards (2second-prizes, 2 third-prizes) for the Progress in Science and Technology, 1State Award (third-prize) for Inventions, and a number of Shaanxi Provincialawards.  Pof. Hou was once elected as National Model Worker, NationalModel Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions. He has enjoyed aSpecial Government Allowance from the State Council. He won the first prize ofGuang Hua Science and Technology Foundation in 1996, and Ho Leung-Ho LeeFoundation Award for Science and Technology Progress in 1999.

Research Achievements: 

Prof. Hou has longbeen engaged in the research of Transient Optics. He led and took part in theresearch projects of nuclear tests and laser nuclear fusion, and other majorfundamental research projects. He developed a number of electro-optic and imageconverter high speed cameras, improving China’s time resolution in ultra-fastdiagnosis by six orders of magnitude, with the response range from infrared toSoft X-ray and because of this he contributed greatly to the field ofphotoelectrical high-speed photography in China. Prof. Hou initiated cathodetransfering and cold and thermal indium sealing technology.  Meanwhile,for the first time in China, he developed the intensifier with double proximityfocus. He put forward the combination of laser lighting, intervening thefiltering and the technology of intensifier, which solved the measurementproblems of fast, dark or small target, making a contribution to thedevelopment of the next-generation equipment of optical imaging in China. Hewas among the first in China to study the negatron affinity with cathode GaAsby the type of transmission, photocathode with III-V and the third generationintensifier. This, along with the invention of cathode of palladium-silver,oxygen and caesium, greatly contributed to the development of Chinesephotoelectric devices and night vision technology.
