The Xi’an Jiaotong University Library originates from Nanyang Public School Library, which was set up in Shanghai in 1896. In October 1919, the main library building was completed and was named as the Shanghai Industrial Specialized School Library of Communication Ministry, and renamed as the Jiaotong University Library in 1921. In 1956, Jiaotong University moved its campus to Xi’an with most of the faculty and 92% books of the library. Therefore, there were two branches of Jiaotong University Library established in Xi’an and Shanghai separately in September 1957. Two years later, the Xi’an Campus and the Shanghai Campus of Jiaotong University became separate universities, so the Library was officially named the Xi’an Jiaotong University Library.

There are two parts to the original library. The North Building was constructed in July 1961, covering 11,200 square meters, while the South Building came into use in March 1991, covering 18,000 square meters. On May 4, 1995, approved by the Propaganda Department of Central Committee, the library was named the Qian Xuesen Library. President Jiang Zemin inscribed the name for the library the same year.

On April 2000, the original Xi’an Jiaotong University merged with Xi’an Medical University and Shannxi Institute of Finance and Economics and formed the new Xi’an Jiaotong University. The three libraries from the three universities were also merged and reorganized accordingly on an enlarged scale. Since then, the library system consists of the Qian Xuesen Library, the Medical Branch Library and the Financial and Economical Branch Library. In August 2003, the two branches moved to the newly-established Library and Research Building in West Campus and merged as the West Campus Library, which covered 10,340 square meters. So far, the overall floorage of the library has amounted to 39,540 square meters with 3,518 seats for reading.

By the end of 2013, the library had collected 4.99 million books, 10,089 kinds of newspapers and periodicals, 4107 current issues, forming a multiple-disciplinary collection system that integrated science, engineering, management and humanity, with an emphasis on machinery, energy, power, electric, electronics, information, material, control, medicine and finance. In Recent years, the library has attached great importance to building electronic resources. It introduced 102 electronic resource platforms at home and abroad, including nearly 300 subject subsets, 42,448 full-text electronic journals in both Chinese and foreign languages, and 1,253,496 electronic-books. The library also paid attention to the collection of original books that reflect the world`s advanced scientific and technological level. It collected 15 world-famous periodicals with a history of over one hundred years from its first issue to the latest one. What`s more, there is a profusion of scientific and technical reports, academic dissertations, conference papers, technical standards, patent documentations, audio-visual and micro materials.

In the principle of resource sharing, the library provides extensive service to readers in and out of our university. Apart from books for borrowing and reference service, it also provides multi-type and multi-level services, such as sci-tech novelty retrieval, information check, issues retrieval, inter-library lending, document delivery, readers training, lectures on special topics and printing service. The library has the authorization for granting a master degree of library science, and provides undergraduates and postgraduates with the course Information Retrieval and Utilization.

The library has adopted the INNOPAC integrated automation system. Related operations in the library like management, interview, catalog, circulation, periodicals and OPAC have all been automated. The library automation integrated system was connected with Campus Network, CERNET and the Internet. Currently, all users in and out of university can visit the library via the Internet.

The library attaches great importance to international academic communication. Now it has built a network of relationships with 25 universities and academic communities from 9 countries and regions for the purpose of exchanging books, periodicals and materials.

The Document Information Center in the Northwest Region of China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) and the secretariat of Shaanxi College Library and Intelligence Service Committee are both located at the library of XJTU. The library also takes charge of the Foreign Textbook Center and the Workstation for Sci-tech Project Consultation and Research Findings Novelty Search, which are set in our university by the Ministry of Education to serve the universities of the whole country.
