President Wang Shuguo
President Wang is a member of the CPC Committee and the Standing Committee of XJTU, responsible for administrative work.
Born in Hebei Province in October 1958, Dr. Wang Shuguo was admitted to Harbin Institute of Technology in 1977 majoring in mechanical engineering, whre he acquired his B.E., M.E., and D.E. respectively. He then studied at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers in Paris as a senior visiting scholar from 1987 to 1989. In 1993, he was promoted to professor for his outstanding academic achievements. He was designated as Vice President of Harbin Institute of Technology in 1998, and was appointed Director of the Hei Longjiang Provincial Science and Technology Bureau in January 1999. He served as President of Harbin Institute of Technology from March 2002 to April 2014, and was elected deputy of the 10th, the 11th and the 12th National People’s Congress.
Major research fields: robot autonomous control theory, robot sensor technology, space robot technology, medical equipment and instruments, biomedical image processing and computer-aided medical technology. He, as a leading researcher, has been in charge of and engaged in more than 20 major state-funded projects such as the National Natural Science Fund Project, the achievements of which have won seven provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards. In addition, he has been granted 15 National Invention Patents. He is holding concurrent posts at sevearal major academic societies, for example he is a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Astronauts, and Vice Director of the Scientific Application Expert Committee of Lunar Exploration Project. His great achievements earned him the title of “National Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution”, etc. Over the past decade, Dr. Wang has lead his team in pioneering a new field of Chinese biomedical engineering, including the development of the world’s first bionic hand for trauma recovery, the first electronic map of human brain anatomy in China and the first robot system in China of minimally invasive interventional operation in the abdominal cavity.
In February 2006, President Wang was granted a medal by the Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in France for his contribution in promoting China-France agricultural cooperation. This is the highest honor in French agricultural science and technology. In the year of 2006, he was granted membership in the Chivalric order, Légion d'honneur.
