The history of School of Public Health (SPH),Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) Health Science Center, can be traced to thegroups related to preventive medicine under Department of Basic Medicine,former Xi’an Medical College in the early of 1960s. In 1985, Xi’an MedicalCollege changed its name as Xi’an Medical University (XMU) with a start ofenrolling undergraduate students in preventive medicine. The Department ofPreventive Medicine, XMU, was established in 1986 and was upgraded to School ofPublic Health (SPH) in 1997. In 2000, SPH was renamed as Department of PublicHealth after the merge of XMU, XJTU and Shaanxi Institute of Finance andEconomics, and became a branch of School of Medicine, XJTU. In 2012, XJTU HealthScience Center was established and SPH was re-established in 2013.
SPH has postdoctoral research center forpublic health and preventive medicine. SPH is authorized to offer doctoraldegree in two second level disciplines (epidemiology and health statistics, andoccupational and environmental health), to offer master degree in first leveldiscipline of public health and preventive medicine (including epidemiology andhealth statistics, occupational and environmental health, nutrition and foodhealth, maternal, child and Adolescent Health, and health toxicology), and tooffer Master of Public Health (MPH). SPH has several departments as follows:Dept. of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Dept. of Occupational and EnvironmentHealth, Dept. of Nutrition and Food Safety, Dept. of Maternal, Child andAdolescent Health, Dept. of Health Toxicology and Health Laboratory Technology,Institute of Endemic Disease, Center for Health Reform and Development, andCenter for Laboratory Teaching. We also have research institutes, e.g.,Ministry of Health Key Laboratory of Micro-nutrients and Endemic Disease,Shaanxi Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety Engineering Research, XJTUInstitute of Preventive Medicine Research, Center for Health Information BigData Management and Analyzing. SHP has 80 full-time and part-time staff,including 18 professors, 30 associate professors; 10 PhD supervisors, 48 masterdegree supervisors. The major tasks of SPH are education on public health andmedicine, research and social service.
SPH focuses on thefront line of global public health and preventive medicine; connects withrequirement of national health care development; concords with socioeconomicstatus, population health and disease distribution in the west of China,develops public health education, research and social service, to promotedisease control and prevention, increase population health status, improvehealthcare and promote a harmonious development of health industry.
SHP is enrollingfull-time undergraduate student in preventive medicine, full-time researchmaster students, full-time Master of Public Health (MPH) students, full-timePhD students, part-time MPH and PhD students. We are among the first batch ofuniversities in developing MPH (1998) and Doctor of Public Health (Dr.PH, 2012)education in China, with support of China Medical Board in the United States.SPH has established excellent collaboration with many internationalorganizations and prestigious domestic and international universities,including exchanges of teachers and students, combined education and research.SPH has deepened collaboration with health administration and practicedepartments and health-related enterprises at the national and local levels,constructed well-developed intern and teaching bases and resources sharingplatform, and co-created an innovation platform for public health education andresearch in the west of China. SPH have around 2,000 graduates in domestic andinternational health-related industries and departments, including healthadministration, medical and health care, food and drug administration,environment monitoring and protection, custom quarantine control,pharmaceutical companies, health insurance, research and education.
In building a firstclass research university round the world, SPH have developed research in awide range of areas, including health evaluation and public nutrition, diseasecontrol and health promotion, epidemiology of infectious diseases, environmentand disease-related gene, cause and prevention of endemic diseases,epidemiology of non-communicable diseases, food quality and safety,occupational hazards assessment and prevention, perinatal and better birth,child and adolescent development and evaluating body and mind health, maternaland child nutrition and health care, health toxicology, health laboratorytechnology, big data excavation and decision support, and health system andpolicy. Recently, SPH has undertaken over 100 projects on National Programs forScience and Technology Development, National Key Technology Research andDevelopment Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China,National Science and Technology Major Project of the Ministry of Science andTechnology of China; National Natural Science Foundation of China, technologyresearch and development and key research projects at the provincial/ministrylevel, and international cooperation projects, with a total research fund over30 million RMB. SPH have won 2 prizes of Klaus Schwarz awarded by theInternational Conference on Biological Inorganic Chemistry, over 10 first andsecond class award at the provincial/ministry level, and over 10 nationalpatents. SPH has over 1,000 publications by now, including over 300 papers inScientific Citation Index. Some PhD students have publications in BMJ,Arthritis & Rheumatism, which were regarded as F1000 by internationalauthorities.
SPH activelyparticipates social service. Many SPH staff have undertaken important positionsin national and local educational and academic institutes and organizations,participated in formulating national and local health policy, law, standard,regulation and guidance in health industry, disease control, health promotionand public health emergency at the national and local levels, providingtechnical support in national and local health administration andimplementation agencies. SPH has submitted several major research reports tothe health-related departments at the national and provincial levels, withtransferring and application of research results on improving health statusamong population in the west of China. SPH have organized students developingand participating social activities, helped them combining their knowledge andpublic health issues in China and developing capacity of finding and solvingproblems in practices and contributing to the society.
As said in an ancientChinese poem: a thousand sails skim past the shipwreck, a forest thrives besidethe withered tree. In this new era, SPH staff have a passion of work to devotein the development and construction of public health work in China, and toachieve more significant results!
