History& Development

The development of Marxism studies of Xi’an JiaotongUniversity (XJTU) enjoys a long history. It was as early as in the year 1952that the teaching and research office of Marxism studies was established, markingthe debut of the journey of promoting Marxism studies of Jiaotong University.

The reform and opening-up in China had been witnessingthe rejuvenation of Marxism studies. All kinds of Marxism institutes had beengradually restored with booming teaching and research activities. Thecultivation of professional talents armed with Marxism theories were also flourishing.

Milestone Events

  • In 1978, the classes designed to train Marxism-Leninism lecturers were opened and recruited undergraduate students, followed insuccession by the exclusive classes for Marxism-Leninism studies, advancedclasses for teaching assistants in philosophy and political economics andsecond-degree classes for ideological and moral education.  

  • From 1980 to 1998, the following five disciplineswere authorized the qualification to grant master degrees: dialectics ofnature, Marxism philosophy, history of the CPC, the socialism establishment ofChina (political economics) and ideological and political education.

  • From 1999 to 2002, the school hosted twomaster-degree classes for staff in higher education institutions: one forlecturers who teaches Marxism and ideological education and another for administrativecounselors who works as guide for the students.

  • In 2003, the following two disciplinesMarxism theories, and ideological and moral education were authorized thequalification to grant doctoral degrees.

  • In 2006, Marxism theories was authorizedas a first-level discipline with the qualification to grant doctoral degrees.

  • In 2009, a post-doctoral research mobilityresearch station of Marxism theories was established.

During the national appraisal of disciplinedevelopment held by the Academic Degree Office of State Council in 2012, the Marxismtheories of Xi’an Jiaotong University ranked top 14% among the 121 collegiate participants.Among all the ranking indexes, the research capacity, quality of degree thesis,and quality of the representative academic paper ranked the tenth, first andseventh respectively.

  • Projects and Publications

The School of Marxism Studies, in the recent fiveyears, has secured 7 provincial-level awards in philosophy, humanities andsocial sciences. It hosts 25 research projects of both state and provinciallevels, including those joint ones with overseas partners. Another 23 keyresearch projects are also conducted. The school gets published in CSSCIjournals 300 papers and 10 academic monographs.

  • Teaching Bases

The School of Marxism Studies has two provincial-levelteaching bases: Research Center of Ideological Education and Information Centerof Situation and Policy Education for College Students. The Marxism theories islabeled as key discipline of Shaanxi Province.

Development Features

The School of Marxism Studies attaches equalimportance to teaching and research, and to discipline development and curriculumdesign as well. The development of the school presents the following five features:

1) To conduct research on Marxism fundamentaltheories on the basis of the history of Marxism and Marxism classics;

2) To work on the big leading-edge projectsin Marxism in Chinese context and deepen the research on theoretical system ofsocialism with Chinese characteristics;

3) To conduct research on social engineeringin view of Marxism and strengthen the reform and opening-up of the research onleading-edge theories and practices;

4) To attach great importance to a closecombination of discipline construction, and teaching and research; to magnifythe support of discipline construction to curriculum design; to do the researchin a more targeted approach and to upgrade the effectiveness of ideological andpolitical education;

5) To host forums on Marxism theories andinter-disciplines, promoting relevant idea exchanges and encouraging diversethinking.
