The School of Electrical Engineering of Xi’an Jiaotong University originated from the electrical engineering program of Shanghai Higher Learning and Industry College (the predecessor of Jiaotong University), under the then Ministry of Post and Communications in 1908. The school boasts the earliest electrical engineering discipline in the Chinese higher learning history. Besides, the school is one of the strongest electrical engineering programs in China with broad curriculum, premier faculty and advanced experimental equipments. Through generations of commitments over the past 100 years, the school has evolved itself as an important engine for talent education and innovative researches in electrical engineering.
The school currently sets up 1 first-class electrical engineering program and encompasses 2 second-class science and engineering, instrument science and technology programs. The school also has a state key lab of electrical insulation and power equipment, a national teaching base of fundamental engineering programs in electrical engineering and electronics, a state administration of energy key lab of advanced power grid and equipment reliability and life assessment technology, a MOE engineering research center for smart electric equipments, a MOE key lab of special electrical technology for national defense purpose, and a Shaanxi research center for smart electric equipments and CAD engineering. The school has 205 outstanding faculty, comprising 2 academicians, 4 ‘thousand-talent project’ scholars, 2 national outstanding instructors, 5 Changjiang scholars, 4 national outstanding youth faculty, 3 Shaanxi outstanding instructors, 23 MOE New Century Talent faculty, 56 professors, 58 PhD advisors, 3 researchers, and 77 associate professors and senior engineers. The school also has 1 National Natural Science Foundation grant innovative research team, 1 MOE innovative team, 2 national outstanding teaching teams, 1 Shaanxi outstanding teaching team and 1 Shaanxi innovative team.
The school sets up two undergraduate programs in electrical engineering and automation, and testing technology and equipments. In particular, the electrical engineering and automation program ranks the first in China and earns wide acclaims in the world. The program received accreditation from the Chinese ministry of education in October 2007. Currently, the school enrolls 1528 undergraduates and over 2000 graduates, including 345 PhD and 830 master students.
Over the past 100 years, the school pursues quality education in an effort to revive the country through education in a down-to-earth spirit. Through generations of innovation and legacy, the electrical engineering program develops a distinction in selective screening, strong foundation, strict requirements, and practice orientation. The school has graduated outstanding alumni, including 30 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, like Qian Xuesen and Qiu Aici etc, and distinguished scholars and figures, such as Zou Taofei, Jiang Zemin, Lu Dingyi, Jiang Zhenghua, and Wang An.
The school sets itself apart in teaching. Over the past decade, the school has authored over 170 textbooks, research publications and translated works, and built the national demonstration center for electrical engineering and electronics education. The school has created 6 national reputable courses and earned 8 national outstanding teaching awards, 4 outstanding textbooks, 2 national outstanding PhD dissertations, and 4 nominated national outstanding PhD dissertations. The school also boasts 3 Shaanxi outstanding courses, 33 Shaanxi outstanding teaching awards, and 11 Shaanxi outstanding textbooks. The school is also the chair of the collaborative engineering master education network in electrical engineering.
The school commits itself to scientific researches in alignment with the national demand and disciplinary innovation. The school initiated formulation of 26 ultra high voltage engineering and technology specifications and standards and full range of 750kV technological specification, participated into formulation of 5 national standards, discussed and reviewed 20 national standards and power industry standards. The school either chaired or participated into several projects of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and actively involved into the ‘Thirteenth- Five Year Plan’ study in the national energy and electrical engineering fields.
The school has established long-term collaborative relationship with 60 universities and research institutions from 15 countries, including the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Italy, Britain, Sweden, Holland, Poland, South Korea and Singapore etc, and has earned broad recognition in the world.
