About Us

In order to improve the design, development and application ability of Chinese food manufacturing equipment and detection equipment, improve the international competitiveness of China’s food manufacturing industry and cultivate the professionals and outstanding engineers with an international perspective in food safety, Xi'an Jiaotong University established the Fuli School of Food Equipment Engineering and Science (referred to as the "Food School"), which was funded by Fu Li Charitable Foundation of Zhejiang province.

Relying on the advantages of such disciplines as mechanical engineering, instrument science and technology, Food School has established three multi-disciplinary professional fields of food processing equipment and process control, food quality and safety inspection technology and instrument, food nutrition and health by combining life science and technology with medical science and other related subjects.

Food School boasts a strong teaching and research team with faculty members from the School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Medicine and School of Life Science, with excellent advanced laboratory conditions. The team is composed ofacademicians of two Academies, distinguished professors for Yangtze River Scholar Project, winners of National Outstanding Youth Fund and teachers from prestigious universities abroad.

The School aims to cultivate innovative talents with professional knowledge of food science and mechanical engineering, to open up 3 new interdisciplinary fields of "food processing equipment and process control", "food quality safety detection technology and instrument" and "nutrition and health" ahead of other universities home and abroad and to explore a new model of university-industry cooperation driven by the demand of food industry.

Educational philosophy: adhering to the tradition of promoting education with hard-work, being down-to-earth and meticulous with learning. By learning the advanced administrative models from the first-class universities home and abroad, Food School will be committed to reform and innovation to create a distinctive FuLi Style --- open, inclusive, pursuing excellence.

Training model: "3+1" excellent engineers training mode.

"3+1" training mode: The basic theory and professional core courses of food science and machinery engineering are to be completed during the first 3 years in Food School; and the excellent students in the fourth year are to be fully funded to study at prestigious universities / enterprises in the United States, Japan, Germany for a year. Through the "3+1" mode of training, we hope to explore some new ideas to cultivate professional engineers to meet the urgent demand for high-end talents of domestic food production industry.

Faculty: Based on strong faculty teams from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Life Science and Technology and the Department of Medicine, we are establishing a quality professional faculty team by attracting domestic and overseas well-known scholars, who are of strong dedication, sense of mission, strong will to study intensively.

Deputy Dean Zhao Hong of Fu Li Food School Visited Universities andEnterprisesfor Investigation

From October 26th to 30th, Deputy Dean Zhao Hong of Fu Li School of Food Equipment Engineering and Sciences, visited Jiangnan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing Agricultural University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and some food related enterprises to conduct a survey.

The Food School of Jiangnan University’s former Party Committee secretary Wang Haiou welcomed Zhao and his staff members. As a member of domestic leading university in food field, Jiangnan University Secretary Wang, by referring to their own professional construction characteristics and experience, introduced the current situation of domestic food industry and university personnel training field. From perspectives of faculty construction, laboratory construction, curriculum design, and food processing equipment and other aspects, she gave relevant detailed suggestions, emphasizing the importance of the work experiences of teachers in enterprises. In addition, she also suggested establishing simulation experiments of food processing and process control by combining the disciplinary advantages of computer and mathematics of Xi'an Jiaotong University, which is of practical and guiding significance for the start and development of the school. Subsequently, Zhao and his team visited the Food Processing Laboratory of Jiangnan University National Engineering Technology Research Center.

Deputy Dean Ying Tiejin of the Fu Li Food Research Institute, Zhejiang University introduced internationalized training of undergraduates, including the process and experience in IFT food professional international certification, and the international advanced education concept of modern university. The institute has invited world renowned professors to join to promote the professional English teaching and the core curriculum construction, and conducted joint training by sending students to Connell, UCD, Purdue and other world prestigious colleges and universities.

During the visit to Hangzhou Hongsheng Beverage Group Limited company, Zhao and his entourage visited Songyuan machinery plant beverage mold manufacturing, high temperature filling, packaging and other food processing and manufacturing equipments.

Related leaders from College of Food Science and Technology of Nanjing Agricultural University and College of Agriculture and Biology of Shanghai Jiaotong University said at the forum that talents with engineering background were in great demand in domestic food industry. The establishment of food equipment major in Xi'an Jiaotong University underlies the industry needs, expecting to achieve the common development of technology and engineering of food industry.

  

Food and Drug Inspection Institute of Shaan’xi Province, Food school of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and TIANLONG Technology held an unveiling ceremony for a jointly-built laboratory of food safety

At 3 p.m. October 21, 2014, the unveiling ceremony of a jointly-built laboratory of food safety of Shaanxi Provincial Food and Drug Inspection Institute, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Fu Li school of food equipment science and engineering, Xi'an Tianlong Science & Technology Co Ltd was held at the conference room of Shaanxi Province Food and Drug Inspection Office. Jiang Zhuangde of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Deputy Director of the Shaanxi Provincial Food and Drug Administration Lin Wei, Xi'an Tianlong Science & Technology Co Ltd Chairman Peng Niancai, Director of Shaanxi Provincial Food and Drug Inspection Institute Liu Haijing, Xi'an Jiao Tong University Fu Li School of Food Equipment Engineering and Science Professor Zhao Hong, and Xi'an Tianlong Science & Technology Co Ltd Li Ming, etc. attended the ceremony.

Deputy Director of the Provincial Food and Drug Administration Lin Wei welcomed the leaders and guests at present. He said, food safety has become a major livelihood issue in China in recent years, which has been attached great importance and a great concern of the whole society, Food and Drug Inspection Institute, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Tianlong Science & Technology Co Ltd join hands together on the occasion of a great demand, which created a new situation for the manufacturing, cooperation and research in China's food safety.

Academician Jiang Zhuangde of Xi'an Jiaotong University delivered a speech at the ceremony. As chairman of board of Fu Li school of Food Equipment Engineering and Science of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Jiang first statedthat the School of Food of Xi'an Jiaotong University is a school with distinctive features and great potential, and that the school also won a donation from the Fu Li charitable foundation, Zhejiang Province. The establishment of this school was targeted at filling the gaps in the field of high-end equipment and precision testing instruments so as to cultivate leading talents in food industry and outstanding engineers, and enhance international competitiveness of China manufacturing industry in future. He also said that Xi'an Tianlong Science & Technology Co Ltd is an innovative high-tech enterprise which pursues the independent brand which originated from university technology scientific research strength. With twenty years of experience in the field of food industry and medical detection, it has an excellent R & D team, mature technology, and product strength. The laboratory, jointly established by Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Food, the Provincial Institute for Food and Drug Control and Tianlong Technology conforms to the needs of people's livelihood and development of science and technology. It will also make important contributions to the country in the field of higher education of personnel training.

Peng Niancai, Chairman of Xi'an Tianlong Science and Technology Ltd. Co. said in the subsequent speech, they will make utmost contributions to technology, products, services and other aspects for the Joint Laboratory.

Then, three representatives signed the Joint Laboratory of food safety Agreement, and Jiang, Lin and Peng jointly unveiled the nameplate, marking the formal establishment of the joint laboratory.

After the unveiling ceremony, the guests visited relevant laboratories including sample room, pretreatment room and rooms for instruments inthe Food and Drug InspectionInstitute.

  

Zhejiang Fu Li Charitable Foundation donated one hundred million to the establishment of Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University

On May 14th, Zhejiang Fu Li Charitable Foundation donated one hundred million yuan to Xi'an Jiaotong University Education Foundation for the establishment of the Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University

The donation ceremony was held in Nanyang International Conference Hall of Xi'an Jiaotong University. XJTU Party Committee Secretary Zhang Maiceng, on behalf of the university, made a speech. ZongFuli, President of Hongsheng Beverage Group of Hangzhou, Wang Shuguo, President of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Jiang Zhuangde, Vice Chairman of Xi'an Jiaotong University Education Foundation, signed the donation agreement. President Wang Shuguo, on behalf of Xi'an Jiaotong University, accepted the donation check, and gave Ms. ZongFuli a donation memorial plaque, and an inscription Professor ZhongMingshan, a famous calligrapher of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The Standing Committee of Shaanxi provincial Party Committee, Xi'an Municipal Party Committee secretary Wei Minzhou, Deputy Director of Shaanxi Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee Li Xiaodong, Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province Li Jinzhu, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Shaanxi province Qian Junchang, and relevant leaders of Xi'an Municipal Party Committee and Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education, the Civil Affairs Department attended the ceremony. Vice President of Xi'an Jiaotong University Jiang Zhuangde presided over the ceremony.

Secretary Zhang Maiceng, in his speech, expressed his gratitude forthe care and support of President ZongFuli and Hongsheng Group for university development. He said, the donation embodies the lofty values and sense of social responsibility of Hongsheng Group for revitalizing our country, repaying the society, and kindness to education. Today, the deterioration of ecological environment in the process of industrialization makes food safety a public concern. Food science and engineering, food safety and nutrition professional training has become the core problem that curbs the development of health industry. The establishment of Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University, brings the opportunity of developing national food industry and significant demand for high-end talents and strict control in food safety. Through the cultivation of innovative high-end talents with knowledge in food science and mechanical engineering, a new interdisciplinary combination point will be formed. The college will start a new major of “food production process equipment and control", create innovative concept of "food safety and quality”, apply measurement and control technology and instrument specialty into food quality monitoring and security surveillance, so as to cultivate high-end interdisciplinary talents with knowledge of quality monitoring and control.

Secretary Zhang Maiceng pointed out that the donation given by Hongsheng Group and Fu Li Charitable Foundation to Xi'an Jiaotong University was not only one hundred million of the capital investment, it would further promote the university to make solemn commitments and profound changes in the development of a modern university. The establishment of Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering not only bore the pursuit of a school and an enterprise, it was more of new expectations of the industry and educational circles and even the whole society. He hoped that the Xi'an Jiaotong University Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering will become a highland for research innovation in food industry, and would create a the bright future for China’s food industry with more young talents of aspirations like president ZongFuli.

ZongFuli, President of Hongsheng Beverage Group Limited Company of Hangzhou said in her speech that she hoped it was a turning point for the development of food machinery industry in China. She said that the establishment of the Xi'an JiaotongUniversity Fu Li School of Food Science and Engineering carried expectations of the whole of China food machinery industry, and it was a pioneering initiative for China’s food industry to have a healthy sustainable development .From “Made in China” to “Created in China”, this transformation calls for joint efforts of China's manufacturing industry, and the cause is inseparable from the education and the business world. As a new generation of the country, we need the courage to change current social ecological environment. Facing demands of social development, people from all walks of life should broaden horizon, promote industrial upgrading and structural optimization and healthy development of China's manufacturing industry. He expressed his hope that the establishment of this school may offer a new opportunity for leaping development of light industry and bring vitality for innovation and reform in education circle. He also expressed his hope thatthis donation can enhance people’s awareness of the social environment changes and jointly strive to make “the next generation have a better life".

Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province Li Jinzhu, in his speech, expressed gratitude to the Hongsheng Group. He said this donation for establishing School of Food Science and Engineering reflected the prospective and sense of responsibilities for the development of the industry of Hongsheng Group, which showed Hongsheng group’s trust and love of the Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shaanxi Province. For years, Xi'an Jiaotong University has always aimed at meeting major national development needs, and actively cooperate with scientific research institutes and leading enterprises to carry out cooperation, making important contributions to the economic and social development of Shaanxi Province and China at large. He stated his wish that the establishment of the School of Food Science and Engineering will cultivate more talents to lead the forefront of food industry.

After the ceremony, the academic forum titled "From Made in China to Created in China" kicked off. Academician Lu Bingheng of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Deputy Dean of Mechanical Science Research Institute Qu Xianming, Professer Jiang Chengyu former Vice President of Northwestern Polytechnical University, Professor Wang Yu, former president of Chinese University Hong Kong, Dean of Mechanical Engineering College of Tianjin University of Science and Technology Li Zhanyong spoke as guests. They, on behalf of academic circle, elaborated the thought and suggestions from “Made in China to Created in China” for Chinese higher education reform and talent cultivation innovation and education system reform. They called for a joint action to enhance people’s awareness of food safety and the scientific means to guarantee the safety.

In the Afternoon, a college debate competition focusing on "food security" was held in the Science Building. The debate teams from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Northwestern University had a fierce debate on "Governance of food safety problem should rely on the national responsibility consciousness?" or “Governance of food safety should rely on the scientific system of norms?" It aroused deep thinking among the audience.

  

Education

Guide for undergraduates

1. Food processing equipment and process control

Training objectives: this major will train students to design and develop food processing equipment with technology and develop their capability of using automation technology for controlling food processing system, strengthen students' humanistic quality, leadership and innovation ability, enhance the international vision and their curiosity for seeking knowledge, cultivate high-end interdisciplinary talents with basic theory and solid food processing technology design, process equipment development and operation control expertise, who can engage in engineering design, technology development, scientific research, organization and management of production and other work in the area of food engineering.

Main courses: mechanical design, numerical control technology, automatic control principle, the principle of food engineering and equipment, process equipment control system design, robot technology and application, food packaging etc..

Training features: this major places emphasis on cultivating personnel in food processing equipment design, manufacturing, process control and quality management, with significant interdisciplinary characteristics through integration of mechanical engineering, materials science and technology, instrument science and technology, food science and engineering, food security and other related disciplines. Training program includes digital control and robot application module, food engineering module oriented to food processing equipment, so as to control production mode from the traditional mechanical control to digital servo control mode through digital technology, and the automation of food manufacturing and packaging process through robot technology, creating an aseptic unmanned factory. It relies on the following predominant disciplines: mechanical engineering, instrument science and technology, medicine, life science.

Employment prospects: students who successfully graduate are geared to subdivision of market demand and of broad and good employment prospects They can work in the following related units: enterprises and institutions such as food quality inspection departments of central, provincial and municipal districts and counties, customs quality supervision units; national and provincial professional research institutes involving food professional; food and other equipment manufacturing enterprises; food related professional of universities and colleges.

Study abroad: co-education with foreign famous universities, outstanding students going abroad at public expense.

2.Food quality and safety inspection technology and instrument

Training objectives: this major aims to cultivate students who have solid theoretical foundation of the food quality and safety, at the same time with development ability of food quality testing instrument, grasp the forefront of world food quality detection method and talents who can engage in standard formulation for food quality and safety testing, testing process design, technical route formulation, instrument product development, use engineering technology to solve problems in the field of food safety detection.

Main courses: automatic control theory, electronic technology, signal and system, engineering drawing, microcomputer principle and interface technology, engineering optics, photoelectric detection technology, digital image processing, the principle of food engineering, food technology, food analysis and detection principle and technology, food quality management standard and regulations.

Training features: this specialty places emphasis on cultivating professionals in the development of food quality testing technology and food safety testing instruments, with significant interdisciplinary characteristics through integration of instrument science and technology, mechanical engineering, material science and technology, analytical chemistry, food science and engineering, food security and other related disciplines. It relies on the following predominant disciplines: Instrument Science and technology, mechanical engineering, medicine, life science and other disciplines.

Employment prospects: students who successfully graduate are geared with strong market demand and of broad and good employment prospects. They can work in the following units: enterprises and institutions like food quality inspection departments of central, provincial and municipal districts and counties, customs quality supervision units; national and provincial professional research institutes involving food professional, research and development department and manufacturing enterprises of food measuring instrument and other instruments; food and other equipment manufacturing enterprises; food related professional of universities and colleges.
