School of Energy and Power Engineering

History

School of Energy and Power Engineering is one of theearliest established schools in XJTU with comprehensive disciplines and adequate qualified faculties. It initiated many primary majors in China, including boiler, steam turbine, automobile manufacturing,refrigeration and cryogenics, compressor, as well as thermal energy power andinternalcombustionenginedisciplines. It is also the most influential base of talent cultivation and scientific research and innovation in the field of energy power science and technology.   

School of Energy and Power Engineering has a long history, it was once the power section of Mechanical Engineering founded in 1921 in Jiaotong University. In 1952, the Department of Power Machinery Manufacture was founded and then moved to Xi’an along with the main body of the university in 1956 as one of the departments that were completely moved to Xi’an.In 1975, School of Energy and Power Engineering merged with several majors in Engineering Physics and formed Power Machinery DepartmentIand Power Machinery DepartmentII. In April 1983, they were renamed respectively as Department of Energy & Power Engineering and Department of Power Machinery Engineering.In 1994, the two departments were merged into the School of Energy & Power Engineering in the department adjustment of XJTU. In 2004, the main body of School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering joined School of Energy and Power Engineering. From then on it became a comprehensive school with talent cultivation and disciplinary research in the field of energy power, energy environment and energy chemical engineering. In 2012, the Department of Process Equipment & Control Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering were separated from School of Energy and Power Engineering and formed the new School of Chemical Engineering and Technology.

The School takes pride in its excellent professors, specialists and scholars at home and abroad with high reputation in the fields ofPower Engineering, Thermophysics, Nuclear Science and Technology, Environmental Engineering, etc. There are 283 teaching and researching faculties, including 227 teachers (among whom, there are 72 professors and 68 associate professors), 29 lab technicians. Above 94% teachers possess Ph.D. degrees. With dense academic atmosphere, the school has built a stable and progressive teaching and researching team with proper knowledge and age structure. There are 1776 full-time undergraduate students, 701 Ph. D candidates, 860 graduate students and 483 non-full-time GCT candidates in our school. During national assessments, the second-level disciplines of Thermal Engineering as well as Fluid Machinery and Engineering ranked first across the country. The education quality of the first-level discipline, Power Engineering and Thermal Fluid Science, ranked first among the similar disciplines (discipline assessment result in 2012). Our school is the appraisal group convener unit for the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics, director and general-secretary units of the Advisor Committee of Energy Power Engineering of Ministry of Education, chairman unit of Engineering Thermophysics Committee, China Association of Higher Education (the original name was National College Engineering Thermophysics Society).

There’re 3 state-level and 2 provincial-level research bases, of which State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering was ranked first each time in national assessment, the first Innovation Research Group of National Natural Science Foundation of China (the first group in engineering field who received such funds for three consecutive periods), 4 Innovative Research Teams led by Cheung Kong Scholars of Ministry of Education and 1 base of College Discipline Innovation Wisdom Plan.

In recent years, with the support of “211 Program” and “985 Program”, the school has made tremendous progresses in discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, etc. At present, we are actively promoting “2011 Collaborative Innovation Plan” to upgrade discipline and faculty construction to a new level.

Teaching & Scientific Research Achievements

The school has 2 national-level outstanding teachers, 1 provincial-level outstanding teachers; 5 national excellent courses, 2 provincial excellent courses, 4 national excellent resources sharing class, 1 national excellent video open class; 1 national teaching team and 1 provincial-level teaching team.

Since 2000, the school has accepted over 30 educational reform projects above provincial levels, 7 state-level teaching achievement awards, 15 teaching achievement awards in Shaanxi Province, and 9 “National Hundred Excellent Ph.D. Dissertations” with another 6 nominations.

Since 2000, the school has received 10 national-level scientific research achievements, more than 40 provincial-level scientific research achievements of second or higher prizes as the hosting unit, more than 1000 state and enterprise projects. The total research fund has mounted to 458.9 million RMB. The school has published 950 SCI papers, 1189 EI papers, 305 granted invention patents and 29 ESI papers in engineering field, taking up 64% of the ESI papers in the university.
