School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of Xi’an Jiaotong University was founded in 2002, which was originated from the discipline of metallic material and heat treatment in the 1950s in Shanghai, and the majority of the material department moved to Xi’an together with the main body of Jiaotong University in 1957.
The State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials (MBM) was founded in School of Material Science and Engineering in 1995. And the School of MSE is among the first authorized institutes for granting doctors’ degree, and the research centers for post-doctoral were also equipped in MSE. The school consists of Department of Material Science, Department of Materials Processing Engineering, Department of Materials Physics and Chemistry.
Multiple research centers and groups have been developed since MSE was founded, including the research group of Material Strength, research group of Advanced Materials, Center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nano scale(CAMP-Nano), group of Welding, group of Casting and Wear-resistant Materials etc. These research and teaching laboratories are fully equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for various research activities from processing, characterization, analysis, to professional training.
Directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China, Xi’an Jiaotong University, is a key university under the construction plan of China’s national “211 Project” and “985 Project”, and the discipline of Material Science and Engineering was granted as the National Key Discipline in 2007. The School has a strong and competitive academic team of 104 faculties including 55 professors/associate professors and 37 doctoral supervisors. There are 5 “National Thousand Plan Talents”, 3 “Distinguished Young Scientists of China National Funds”, 3 “Cheung Kong Scholars”, 1 “Young Talents Plan Scholar”, 1“Outstanding Young Talent”, 2 winners of “Excellent Young Scientists Fund”, 1 team of ”Science Fund for Creative Research Groups” , 3 innovative teams of “Cheung Kong Scholars” in School of Materials Science and Engineering, and 31 faculties were selected as the” New Century Excellent Talents “named by the National Ministry of Education.
School of MSE dedicates itself to fostering the interdisciplinary talents who can not only have an international perspective and a creative spirit but also have specialized background and outstanding abilities in scientific research. MSE has achieved fruitful research results and made a great contribution to the development of national economy. MSE has been in charge of 3 national 973 projects, 1 national 863 key project and more than 600 research programs including the National Natural Science Fund (NSFC), National Defence and Military Project and Enterprise Collaboration etc., MSE has also won many outstanding awards including the Second Prize of NSFC (1project), the Second Prize of National Award for Technological Inventions(5 projects), the Second Prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress (1 projects), Provincial Science and Technology Awards (more than 20 projects) and has been authorized tens of patents for inventions since 2005. More than 1000 high-impact research results were published on famous international academic journals such as Nature, Nature Material, PRL, Nano Letters, Advance Materials, APL, PFB, Acta Materialia and etc.
School of MSE has built world-wide collaborations for research development and international exchange programs with countries like the US, France, Japan, Korea and others. Tens of international research centers were established and has attracted multiple excellent scholars and research teams from worldwide. In 2010, one paper of the School of MSE was published on Nature (the first in XJTU). The school was also the winner of “Top 10 Technical Progress of Higher Education” and the discipline of Material Science and Engineering was selected as one of the “International Top 50 Disciplines”.

Processing(synthesis, producing, working) and process control technologies of advanced materials, such as liquid molding tech, Plastic molding tech, modern welding and connection tech, heat treatment CAD and intelligent technology computer monitoring automation and surface technology of material processing.
IV. Testing and analysis of Material mechanics, physics and chemistry performance, microstructure and behaviors, material strength and mechanical behavior, surface engineering and protection against corrosion etc.

Our selection process mainly aims at choosing the students who are most likely to contribute to MSE’s intellectual and cultural community and, ultimately Xi’an Jiaotong University, China or their own country, the whole world. Race, ethnicity, gender, and religion are excluded from the criteria. SMSE invites applications from students whose breadth of academic experience and fitness for the specific field of study suggest the potential for scholarly achievement. We require online submission of the application. In general, only applicants holding or going to get the Bachelor’s (for master student’s enrollment) or Master’s Degree (for doctor student’s enrollment) of science and engineering background or equivalent, with distinguished undergraduate records, are admitted. Ø Department of Materials Science
Department of Material Science is consisted of several research groups and centers at present, including research groups of Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Surface Engineering and Advanced Materials, as well the Center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nanoscale (CAMP-Nano). The department now has 36 faculties, 15 Professors and 13 Associate Professors included.
Department of Material Science has a reasonable quantity of provincial and national key subjects and outstanding courses. It houses a key center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nanoscale, as well as three professional research groups for the study of Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Surface Engineering and Advanced Materials. This department pays keen attention on the disciplinary education quality and the ability that students can acquire on the study of materials science. Students are trained to be qualified enough to undertake further research and development works in both academia and industrial fields.
Research Group of Mechanical Behavior of Materials
Research Group of Mechanical Behavior of Materials is a key disciplinary research team of XJTU, it has made great contribution to the frontier study of materials science since established. This group is now consisted of 17 faculties, including 9 Professors, 4 Associate Professors and 4 Assistant Professors. This team has been in charge of several General Programs, Key Programs and Major Research Plans launched by NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China), besides, experts of this research group has also achieved fruitful results in National “973”Projects, International (Regional) Joint Research Programs and won Science Fund for Creative Research Groups.
Academic outcome has been improved in both quantity and quality, a steadily increasing number of papers were published on famous international academic journals such as Nature, Nature Materials, PRL, Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, APL, PRB and Acta Materialia etc.
Research Group of Mechanical Behavior of Materials was elected as the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress of Higher Education and the Second Prizes of 2013 National Award for Technological Inventions. Research Group of Surface Engineering
Research Group of Advanced Materials
Research Group of Advanced Materials is consisted of 9 faculties at present, including 4 Professors, 3Associate Professors and 2 Assistant Professors. Among them, one is granted expert of “Tengfei Plan of XJTU”; 6 people were selected as the New Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education, 1 professor was nominated as the “AvH Research Fellow”. Research areas of this group include but not limited to Structural & Functional Integration of Ceramics, Mechanical Alloying study. In recent years, the group has hosted more than 60 projects such as National Science Fund, National "863 Program", National "973 Program", and the National Key Scientific and Technological Project etc. More than 400 papers has been published on SCI journals, and more than 100 National Patent for Invention in China has been successfully applied ,among them 70 were authorized patents and 7 were verified by the Ministry of Education.
This research group mainly focuses on the study of Advanced ceramic materials, such as Preparation technology, characterization of performance and application of structural & functional integration of ceramic materials, including the series of silicon carbide ceramics, machinable ceramics, porous ceramics, ultra-high temperature ceramics, wood ceramics, optical ceramics, nano ceramics and powder, ceramic/metal welding, carbon/ceramic composites, thermoelectric conversion materials, photovoltaic materials and energy storage materials.
The team is also the winner of second prize of National Award for Technological Inventions, 1 first prize of Technological Invention of Ministry of Education, first prize (1)and second prize(1) of Science and Technology Award of Universities in Shaanxi.
The group has established extensive cooperation with both domestic and overseas counterparts. Joint research plans have been carried out with international institutes and universities, such as
Osaka University, Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan; the University of Michigan, Pennsylvania State University in the US; Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg in Germany; Ecole Centrale Paris in France and University of Western Australia and so on.
CAMP-Nano (Center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nanoscale)
The Center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nanoscale (CAMP-Nano) is a first-class international research and development platform. CAMP-Nano was established with the joint efforts of Prof. Evan Ma, Prof. Zhiwei Shan and Prof. Ju Li under the support of Prof. Jun Sun (Dean of School of Materials Science & Engineering of XJTU) and other leaders and colleagues. CAMP-Nano is closely related to national key discipline of material science and engineering as well as the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Behavior of Materials. Using the methods of world advanced in-situ testing, quantification, dynamic testing and the skills of computer simulation and theoretical calculation, CAMP-Nano is endeavoring to become the world-class research platform in searching for the structure and function of materials in the nano-scales. Research fields include Materials’ mechanical behavior in micro-nano scale, Multi field effect on micro-nano scale materials and Micro-nano scale material performance based device designation.
Prof.Evan Ma, Director of CAMP-Nano, scholar of the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, member of Material Science Society (MRS) and American Society for Metals (ASM), APS (American Physical Society, works in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University from 2002 until present. Prof.Ma received his doctor's degree from Tsinghua University (thesis at California Institute of Technology) in 1989. Prof. Ma has more than 280 publications with 14500 SCI citations and 65 H-index, he also gave nearly 100 invited talks at international conferences. Prof. Ma was awarded Materials Science Research Silver Medal (from ASM International, 2004), cited for important experimental and theoretical contributions in the study of metastable and nanocrystalline materials. He was recommended as the High Cited Researcher in Materials Science in June, 2014.
Prof. Zhiwei Shan
Prof. Zhiwei Shan, Executive Director, Center for Advancing Materials Performance from the Nanoscale, Director, Hysitron Applied Research Center, China (HARCC), Deputy Director, State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Deputy Dean, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China.
Prof. Shan is the member of “Chinese 1000 Talent Program”, Chang Jiang Scholar, National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund Award, he has published 50+ papers in peer reviewed journals, including the most prestigious ones such as Science, Nature, Nature Materials et al with more than 2090 SCI citation so far. Prof. Shan also organized and co-organized 13 international conferences; authored/presented more than 100 talks with half of them being invited talks; he has found and co-found three international research centers and has been essentially in charge of total 10 million USD research budget.

Prof Ju Li, Overseas Director of CAMP-Nano, is the Battelle Energy Alliance Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering, MIT Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, he won the Materials Research Society (MRS) Graduate Student Silver Medalist in 1998, Presidential Early Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2005, and the Materials Research Society (MRS) in 2006, he is also the winner of Outstanding Young Investigator Award, Technology Review TR35 award (2007), TMS Robert Lansing Hardy Award (2009), Chinese Ministry of Education and Li Ka Shing Foundon Chang Jiang Scholar Award (2009), Lee Hsun Young Scientist Lecture Series on Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2011).
CAMP-Nano has built long-term cooperative relationships with many international famous corporations, where mutual and international benefit can be achievement through alternative arrangements.
