Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) Hainan International College held its opening ceremony for the 2026 freshmen on Sept 17 at the Lingshui International Education Innovation Pilot Zone. Over 500 students, both Chinese and international, gathered to begin their academic journey by the South China Sea.

The event featured Zhang Liqun, president of XJTU and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, along with local government officials, university leaders, faculty, alumni, and student representatives. Chai Wei, vice-president of XJTU, presided over the ceremony.

Ding Hui, director of the Hainan Provincial Department of Education, welcomed the new students, highlighting XJTU's heritage and its commitment to national strategies through the Hainan International College. He assured strong support for the institute's growth and innovation.

President Zhang Liqun emphasized XJTU's tradition of serving national needs, noting the institute's role in advancing the Hainan Free Trade Port. He urged students to embrace cultural diversity, pursue academic excellence, and foster global competencies.

Zhang set three expectations for the freshmen: uphold integrity and critical thinking, pursue excellence in academics and technology, and foster virtue and cross-cultural friendships.

Academician Guo Liejin shared the story of Academician Chen Xuejun, inspiring students to adopt the Westward Relocation Spirit and align personal goals with national priorities.

Alumni and faculty representatives pledged support for students' development, encouraging them to uphold XJTU's traditions and broaden their international perspectives.

The Hainan International College offers joint degree programs with world-class universities, including the University of British Columbia and Lancaster University, focusing on areas like Carbon Neutrality Science and Language Data.

Partner universities sent messages of collaboration, highlighting the importance of cross-border exchanges and wishing students a rewarding experience.

Student representatives expressed excitement for campus life, with Chinese students pledging to serve their country and international students praising China's academic environment.

The ceremony concluded with the university anthem, followed by an inaugural lecture by Professor Lu Weiming, encouraging students to cultivate moral character and academic excellence.
