XJTU releases research results on logging-while-drilling transducer
The novel high-temperature acoustic logging-while-drilling (LWD) transducer developed by Professor Xu Zhuo's team at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has achieved stable operation for over 40 hours in laboratory tests, with all technical specifications meeting requirements.
This milestone marks significant progress in the national key R&D project "High-Temperature High-Pressure Acoustic Transducers," demonstrating XJTU's international leadership in ultra-high-temperature acoustic LWD transducer development and related process technologies.
Acoustic logging transducers serve as critical components in logging equipment, enabling reservoir evaluation, wellbore integrity assessment, and detection of near-well geological structures throughout the entire lifecycle of oil and gas exploration.
The team's integrated innovation approach, spanning fundamental research, material preparation, device development, and engineering applications, has addressed the longstanding challenges of deployment failure and measurement inaccuracy in traditional transducers. Their product series can meet the operational demands of most ultra-deep oil and gas wells in China.
Professor Xu proposed an innovative material system concept, built upon decades of accumulated research. Team member Professor Yan Yongke revolutionized material design and preparation techniques, achieving a breakthrough in piezoelectric material performance with operational temperatures elevated to 300 C and pressure resistance reaching 200MPa, key parameters surpassing international competitors.
Researcher Wang Sanhong and his colleagues addressed extreme downhole environmental challenges through meticulous process optimizations, enabling transducer stability across ultra-wide temperature ranges and developing multi-variant products for diverse operational scenarios.
This advancement not only serves national oil exploration megaprojects but also extends its material systems and sensing technologies to strategic domains, including deep-sea exploration and geothermal monitoring. These breakthroughs provide foundational technical support for developing China's deep-earth exploration technology system.
