XJTU shines at 2025 MCM/ICM with record achievements
XJTU's team receives the COMAP Scholarship Award.
Students from Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) secured two Outstanding Winner Awards, 16 Finalist Awards, and 63 Meritorious Winner Awards at the 2025 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM).
The university ranked second globally in the Outstanding Winner Awards, marking its eighth year of claiming the competition's highest honor. One of the top winning teams also received the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) Scholarship Award, a distinction granted to only six teams worldwide.
Organized by COMAP, the MCM/ICM is the only international mathematical modeling contest and one of the most influential competitions in the field. Topics span diverse areas such as environment, energy, finance, medicine, and security.
Teams of up to three undergraduates must tackle complex problems over four days, completing tasks from model-building and problem-solving to writing a full English research paper. This year's competition attracted 27,456 teams from over 1,700 universities across 20+ countries and regions, with more than 80,000 participants. Only 35 teams (0.16 percent) earned the Outstanding Winner Award globally.
XJTU prioritizes meticulous preparation for the contest. Led by its Practical Education Center, the university established an expert panel and launched preparatory efforts in October 2024, drawing 779 teams (2,325 students).
Throughout a half-year training program featuring lectures on "Mathematical Modeling Methods and Applications" by renowned experts, students honed their analytical skills, mastered mathematical tools, strengthened teamwork, and bridged theory with practice.
