XJTU-led innovation in eco-friendly circuit breaker technology earns national recognition

The technological achievement "Key Technology Research on Eco-Friendly Generator Rapid Circuit Breakers" and the new product "ZHN-31.5 210kA Eco-Friendly Generator Rapid Circuit Breaker Equipment" have recently passed national appraisal, with Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) Professor Rong Mingzhe's team as the lead developer and two Xi'an-based companies as collaborators.
The appraisal committee was chaired by Academician Shu Yinbiao of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, with Academicians Cheng Shijie, Rao Hong, and Wang Qiuliang serving as vice chairs. Members included project experts and leading authorities from the National Energy Administration, China Electric Power Research Institute, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and other prominent institutions.
During the appraisal meeting, the expert panel closely reviewed the project materials and listened to in-depth technical presentations from the research team. Following detailed discussions, the committee unanimously recognized the outstanding innovation and advanced nature of both the technological achievement and the new product, certifying them as being at the international leading level.
The ZHN-31.5 eco-friendly generator rapid circuit breaker is rated at 31.5 kilovolts with a nominal current of 40 kiloamperes (kA) and a rated short-circuit breaking current of 210 kA. Its interruption time is less than 40 milliseconds, meeting the demands for fast and reliable interruption in large-scale nuclear and hydropower units. The breaker is characterized by its high current-carrying capacity, large breaking current, rapid fault clearance, and environmental friendliness.
This technological achievement is not only crucial for the localization of key power equipment in large-scale nuclear and hydropower sectors but also represents a breakthrough in addressing critical bottlenecks through an innovative technical approach. It marks China's mastery of the core theories and technologies in eco-friendly, high-capacity generator circuit breakers.
Moreover, this technology will lead to the development of a series of products, diversifying the generator circuit breaker market. It is set to be widely applied and promoted in high-current interruption scenarios, such as the rapidly growing pumped storage power stations in recent years.
