XJTU achieves outstanding results in national robot competition
Professor Mei Xuesong, director of the Robotics Research Institute at XJTU, attends the opening ceremony and visits participating faculty and students.
The 23rd China University Robot Competition (ROBOCON) recently concluded at Nanjing University of Science and Technology. Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU)'s team won four first prizes, three second prizes, and one third prize. The university also received the Excellent Organization Award, marking its best performance to date.
Several academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, representatives from participating universities, the mayor of Wuxi city, and Zheng Tianxiang, a first-level researcher from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, attended the closing ceremony.
This year's competition, themed Grain Storage, simulated tasks such as seedling cultivation, transplanting, and harvesting, aiming to raise awareness about food conservation.
A total of 133 teams from 92 institutions participated, including XJTU, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beihang University, Tongji University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The event attracted extensive coverage from nearly 20 media outlets, including Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, China Education TV, and People's Daily Online. During the finals, the event was broadcast live on over 20 platforms, including Xinhua News Agency's app, China Education TV, and Bilibili, with over 2 million viewers.
The ABU-ROBOCON competition in the Asia-Pacific region started in 2001 and is held annually. The topics are set by the host country and include both domestic and international rounds. The competition requires integrating mechanical, electronic, control, image recognition, and computer technologies. Teams spend approximately 10 months preparing and building robots to complete competition tasks.
The XJTU Robotics Club (ABU ROBOCON Robotics Team), established in October 2001, has participated continuously for 23 years. The team has won the national championship three times, national third place seven times, and the Best Design Award four times. It has also represented China in ABU-ROBOCON, winning the international championships twice and placing third once, becoming the first domestic team to achieve an international championship.
