XJTU makes progress in toughening metastable β-titanium alloy

A novel structural design strategy on alloy composition, Ti-1Al-8.5Mo-2.8Cr-2.7Zr (wt%), was proposed by the research team of Sun Jun, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

It marks another significant progress made by the State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in the development of metastable titanium alloys for improved mechanical properties

The team's novel hetero-layered structure design strategy provides an effective example for developing high-performance metastable β-titanium alloys and offers new ideas for designing advanced titanium alloys and other metal structural materials with similar properties.

Prediction of critical size for mechanical properties and deformation mechanism transformation of heterogeneous laminated Ti-1Al-8.5Mo-2.8Cr-2.7Zr alloy, and its comparison with the mechanical properties of currently reported metastable titanium alloy

The research results, titled Trifunctional nanoprecipitates ductilize and toughen a strong laminated metastable titanium alloy, have been published online in the journal Nature Communications.

The study provides a powerful solution to significantly enhance the initiation stress of TRIP/TWIP metastable alloys in order to improve their yield strength, and achieve precise control of the deformation mechanism initiation sequence in the matrix.
