Two XJTU alumni are now Shenzhou XIV astronauts; another a designer-researcher
Chen Dong, and Cai Xuzhe, two alumni of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), are now serving as Shenzhou XIV astronauts.
Chen Dong, of the Han ethnic group, is a member of CPC and a native of Luoyang, Henan province. He earned his master’s degree of Industrial Engineering at the XJTU School of Management.
He is now a first-class astronaut of the People's Liberation Army Astronaut Brigade, with the rank of Senior Colonel.
Chen, honored as a first-class pilot, once served as squadron commander of a fighter jet regiment until May 2010, when he was recruited by the PLA Astronaut Division as one of the unit's second-generation astronauts. In October 2016, he took part in the 33-day Shenzhou XI mission. He was awarded the honorary title of "Heroic Astronaut" by the Central Committee of the CPC, the State Council and the Central Military Commission, and received the "Third Class Space Merit Medal" in November 2016.
Cai Xuzhe, of the Han ethnic group, is a member of CPC and a native of Shenzhou, Hebei province. He earned his master’s degree of Industrial Engineering at the School of Management, Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU).
He is now a second-class astronaut of the People's Liberation Army Astronaut Brigade, with the rank of Senior Colonel. Liu Zhaoxia earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in XJTU. She is now a researcher at the Astronaut Center of China and the chief designer of the astronaut system.
