On May 13, Xi'an Jiaotong University’s immunology ranked among the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators, or ESI, an international database revealing emerging science trends. The immunology is the university’s 16th subject to be listed in the ESI.

Other of the university’s subjects highly ranked as ESI in the world are engineering, materials science, computer science, chemistry, clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, earth sciences, biology and biochemistry, physics, social sciences, molecular biology and genetics, mathematics, neuroscience and behavior, economics and business, and environmental science and ecology.

Among them, engineering is in the top 1‱, and materials science, computer science, and chemistry are in the top 1‰.

There are 841 institutions in the world’s top 1% of immunology in the ESI and Xi'an Jiaotong University ranks 830th. Xi'an Jiaotong University has published 471 articles on this subject, which have been cited 5,278 times in total.

The ESI system is one of the most important indicators used to evaluate the academic level and influence of universities and scientific research institutions. It divides all disciplines into 22 professional fields and ranks the papers published by various institutions around the world in the past 10 years according to the total frequency of citations. 

Entering the top 1% of global universities and scientific research institutions in various fields of ESI indicates that those disciplines have entered an international high-level, and entering the top 1‰ is usually considered to have reached the world-class level.
