Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) began delivering courses in journalism and communication in 2004. XJTU and the Publicity Department of the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee established the School of Journalism and New Media in 2015.
The school launched undergraduate programs in networks and new media in 2011, a professional master's program in journalism and communication in 2010, and doctoral programs in the interdisciplinary areas of new media and social governance in 2019.
There are a total of 37 professional teachers, with 23 master's tutors, eight doctoral tutors, one recipient of the special government allowance of the State Council, one network education teacher recognized by the Ministry of Education, one member of the Teaching Committee of Journalism and Communication of the Ministry of Education, one innovative team supported by Shaanxi Province, and one new-type think tank rated Class-A in Shaanxi Province.
The school focuses on new media, and aims to cultivate high-end new media communication talents who adhere to Marxist views on journalism and professional media ethics, have patriotism, international vision, and the capacity to conduct operations, management, information analysis and social governance as mediated by new media.
The school, paying great attention to its engineering programs, has seven ministerial and provincial-level platforms based on more than 200 scientific research programs. Their research outcomes have been published in top international and domestic journals such as the International Journal of Communication.
