XJTU achieves advance in real-time heart failure diagnosis
Recently, ACS Nano (IF = 13.334) has published an article by You Minli, a PhD candidate from the Bioinspired Engineering and Biomechanics Center, XJTU, and others. The article, entitled Household Fluorescent Lateral Flow Strip Platform for Sensitive and Quantitative Prognosis of Heart Failure Using Dual-Color Upconversion Nanoparticles, reports a system which provides patients and doctors with real-time diagnosis and prognosis of heart failure (HF). A fluorescent lateral flow strip (LFS) is designed to detect presence of two HF-associated antigens (ST2 and BNP respectively) with only 10 ml of serum. Each antigen produces different coloring on the strip and the brightness of the color increases with the concentration of the antigen. Meanwhile, a smartphone app is developed to read, analyze and send the results to doctors, who can manage the case accordingly. The accuracy and re-usability of the strip was clinically confirmed with serum samples from 38 HF patients.
This research was completed under the guidance of Prof. Xu Feng and Associate Prof. Lin Min and in collaboration with the School of Mechanical Engineering and the First and the Second Affiliated Hospital of XJTU.
