A doctoral student’s paper awarded the first“ACM Chinese Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Prize”
On October 23, the "China Awarding Ceremony of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)" was held in Zhengzhou University. At the ceremony, "ACM Chinese Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Prize" was awarded for the first time. Dr.Yang Lei of XJTU got the prize. Another recipient was Dr.Ling Zhen from Southeast University. The chairman of ACM, ACM Fellow Alex Wolf, the recipient of Turing Award and the father of virtual reality professor Ivan Sutherland and the director of the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Education Li Zhimin conferred the prizes to the nominees.
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) was founded in 1947. It is the largest and most famous scientific and educational computer society. ACM Chinese Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Prize is to reward the academic achievements acquired in the field of computer science and engineering and encourage the specialized researches done by the awardees. Starting from 2014, the authors of one or two doctoral dissertations that are recognized for innovation will be awarded. The awarding ceremony will be held at the annual meeting of Chinese board of director of ACM in each October.
Yang Lei received his doctoral degree from the Department of Computer of the School of Electronic and Information Engineering in 2014. His supervisor is professor Qi Yong. His doctoral dissertation thoroughly studied and analyzed three important problems including the signal conflict of labels and readers, authentication of radio frequency based identification technology and label mobile tracking. So far, his research results have been published on the proceedings of top international conferences or journals such as ACM MobiCom, ACM MobiHoc, IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE ICNP, IEEE TPDS and IEEE TMC, among which 11papers were recommended to type A conferences or journals by CCF and 3 to type B conferences or journals. After his graduation, his two papers on the real-time tracking problem of radio frequency and the distribution model on online sociality network data won "the Best Paper Prize" respectively from ACM MobiCom 2014 and ACM MobiHoc 2014. ACM MobiCom and MobiHoc are thought to be two top international conferences in the field of mobile and wireless communication. The jury of ACM MobiCom granted the highest prize of the conference to the authors in Asian research institutes and universities for the first time. So far, Dr.Yang Lei is the only researcher who has received the two prizes in one single year.
