A Nationwide Sharing: XJTU MOOC Launched
Recently, "MOOC TV Channel of Chinese Universities" of Aike (Favorite Courses) under the Ministry of Education officially announced that four XJTU MOOC courses will be online starting from this semester. The courses include "Circuit" instructed by Professor Luo Xianjue, "Computer Science" by Researcher Wu Ning, "A Guide to Chinese Philosophy Classics" by Associate Professor Yan Lianfu and "Organic Chemistry" by Professor Tang Yuhai. Later, "System Engineering" given by Professor Wu Feng, "Visual Attainment" by Professor Li Li, and "Digital Control Techniques" by Professor Mei Xuesong will also be soon online on East and West Course Network and EWANT. XJTU excellent MOOC realize a nationwide on-line sharing.
MOOC, namely Massive Open Online Courses, was initiated in famous universities like Stanford University, Harvard University and MIT. It moves the classroom learning resources to networks for students all over the world. Its rapid development has huge effects on the models, approaches and conceptions of higher education. MOOC lays particular emphasis on all learning processes. Its features, management, discussion-type, learning models and attestation are greatly different from those of long-distance education.
MOOC accompanies classroom teaching. The features of MOOC are as follows: the knowledge is shared in forms of fragments, high-frequency interaction and cooperation, and peer review. Its features are more in line with the learning in information age. The combination of traditional classroom teaching and on-line MOOC learning will become a education mode which finds it more suitable to the information age.
XJTU began to design MOOC in 2013. At present, 23 courses are approved and are in the process of course construction. The courses are selected by the university based on a previous nomination by relevant schools upon the application of research groups.
This is another national action to promote course construction after the national shared courses and national elite video open courses. It will display the high-quality courses of XJTU, enlarge its popularity and influence in teaching and lay firm foundation for speeding up the internationalization. The current courses are organized and planned by the Department of Undergraduate Education with the assistance and supporty by the Data and Information Center, the Radio and Television Center, the School of Network and the Public Press of XJTU.
XJTU has joined course unions like the Aike Net of the Ministry of Education, the "Classroom Online" of Tsinghua University, EWANT and C9 Association. It also reached a cooperative intent with world-famous course platform Coursera. The high-quality courses of XJTU will be pushed to China and to the world. The high-quality course resource of famous universities at home and abroad will also be introduced to XJTU free of charge. XJTU has refined the courses in to a "Big System" scheme to upgrade the teaching quality and improve the teaching models.
